| The
Anchorage
The
Anchorage is a 3 story residence with 25
apartments in the Wards Corner area of
Norfolk at 112 Cromwell Parkway. The
attractive brick building has 19 single and
6 two-bedroom units designed specifically to
accommodate the accessibility needs of
persons with severe mobility impairments, primarily
wheelchair users. Electrical switches and
outlets are elevated for wheelchair
convenience. Kitchen arrangements likewise
permit maximum wheelchair access. Each
apartment has a roll-in shower rather than
the usual shower/tub arrangement.
The
Anchorage also contains a community room,
library, recreation room and laundry room
with accessible appliances. A major
convenience of life in the Anchorage is its
proximity to the Words Corner Shopping
complex, 3 minutes away by wheelchair.
The
Anchorage was developed by AHC and cosponsor
Accessible Space, Inc. (ASI) of St. Paul,
Minnesota, thorough the HUD 811 program and
operates within HUD guidelines. HUD provides
an annual subsidy which permits residents to
pay only 30% of their adjusted income for
rent.
As an
independent living facility, residents must
be over 18 years of age, low income, capable
of self management and responsible for
arranging their personal attendant care.
They are often able to pool their attendant
services adding to the flexibility of their
care.
ASI is
responsible for management of the Anchorage.
